Microwaves are the range of radio frequencies between about 1 GHz (one gigahertz, or one billion oscillations per second) and about 300 GHz. For comparison, television transmissions normally occupy frequencies below the microwave region, from about 50 Mhz to 600 MHz (one Megahertz is one million oscillations per second, one GHz is 1,000 MHz) and cellular telephones operate in the 800 to 900 MHz range, again just below microwave frequencies. Microwave communications equipment and systems perform the transmission of signals by sending microwaves, either directly or via a satellite. The receivers for microwave signals are usually disc-shaped antennas a few yards across, and are often seen installed in business locations or near private homes.
